Esoteric

Esoteric refers to knowledge, teachings, or practices that are intended for or understood by a select group of people, often those who have undergone special training, initiation, or study. It is the opposite of exoteric, which means knowledge that is widely known or easily accessible to the public.

In a broader sense, esoteric can relate to:

Mystical or hidden wisdom – Teachings that require deep understanding or spiritual insight.

Symbolism and allegory – Knowledge that is conveyed through complex symbols, requiring interpretation.

Secret traditions – Ideas passed down through exclusive groups, such as mystery schools or initiatory societies.

Freemasonry, Hermeticism, and certain branches of philosophy, religion, and the occult all contain esoteric elements, meaning their full meaning is often revealed only to those who seek deeper understanding.
